What to include in an estimate

  • The word Estimate, a number and the date
  • Your details and the customer's, and the job address if it is different
  • Labour and materials on separate lines
  • Tax and the estimated total
  • How long the estimate is valid, and what could change the price

Estimate vs quote

An estimate is an approximate price: if the job turns out bigger, the final bill can be higher. A quote is a fixed price. If you can't be sure of the cost, send an estimate and explain what could change it.

Questions people ask

Can the final invoice be higher than the estimate?

It can, because an estimate is not a fixed price. Tell the customer as soon as you see the cost will go up, and explain why.
