Add a watermark to a PDF

Mark a copy as CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT or "Only for KYC" before you share it. Type your text, choose how it looks and save. The watermark goes on every page in your browser, and the file is never uploaded.

The tool above works in your browser: your files stay on your device and are not uploaded. The steps below are for this tool.

How to add a watermark to a PDF

  1. Choose your PDF in the tool above.
  2. Type the Watermark text, for example CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, COPY, or a line such as "For bank account opening only".
  3. Pick the Layout (diagonal or straight), the Strength (light, medium or strong) and the Colour.
  4. Press Add watermark and download the new copy. Your original file is not changed.

The text is placed in the middle of every page, at the same angle as the reader sees the page, and it is see-through so the page below stays readable. Any language works, including Hindi, Arabic and other scripts, because your browser draws the letters.

Watermark ID copies before you share them

When you send a copy of an ID card, passport or bank statement, a watermark that says who it is for and why, such as "For XYZ Bank KYC, 1 Nov 2026", makes the copy much less useful to anyone who gets hold of it later. Keep the text short so it stays large and easy to read.

Good to know

  • The watermark is added as a see-through picture of your text on top of each page. It cannot be selected or searched as text.
  • A watermark marks a copy; it does not lock it. To stop other people opening the file, protect it with a password as well.
  • A PDF locked with a password has to be unlocked first.
