Will my file fit under a form’s limit?

Too big: 230 KB is 230,000 bytes, over a 200 KB limit however the form counts it (200,000 or 204,800 bytes). Make it at least 13.1% smaller, for example with Reduce PDF size in the app.

The converter above works in your browser and sends nothing anywhere. The steps for making a file smaller use PDF Maker, our Android app.

The rules in one minute

There are two ways to count, and both are in use:

Decimal and binary units side by side
SizeDecimal (1 KB = 1000 bytes)Binary (1 KB = 1024 bytes)
1 KB1,000 bytes1,024 bytes
1 MB1,000 KB = 1,000,000 bytes1,024 KB = 1,048,576 bytes
2 MB2,000 KB2,048 KB
0.5 MB500 KB512 KB
200 KB0.2 MB = 200,000 bytesabout 0.195 MB = 204,800 bytes
100 KB0.1 MB = 100,000 bytesabout 0.098 MB = 102,400 bytes

To turn MB into KB, multiply by 1000 (or 1024). To turn KB into MB, divide by 1000 (or 1024). Android phones and Macs show file sizes in decimal units. Windows File Explorer counts 1024 bytes to the KB but still writes "KB", so the same file can look slightly smaller on a Windows PC than on your phone.

Which one does a form use?

Most forms do not say. The safe way is to treat the limit as decimal: keep a "200 KB" file at or under 200,000 bytes. That passes a form that counts 1000 bytes to the KB and also one that counts 1024. The "will it fit" check above does exactly this, and tells you how much smaller a file needs to be.

PDF Maker works the same way. When you ask for "under 200 KB", it makes the file at most 200,000 bytes. When a photo form sets a minimum, such as "at least 20 KB", the app counts that minimum with 1024 bytes to the KB plus a small margin, so the file is big enough in both ways of counting.

My file is too big: what now?

For a PDF, see how to compress a PDF to a KB size, with what to expect at 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB and 1 MB. For a photo or signature, see how to resize a photo to KB. Both are done in PDF Maker on your phone.

Questions

How many KB are in 1 MB?

1000 KB in decimal units, which phones and most websites use, or 1024 KB in binary units, which Windows uses.

How many KB is 2 MB?

2000 KB in decimal units, or 2048 KB in binary units.

Is 200 KB the same as 0.2 MB?

Yes in decimal units: 200 KB is 0.2 MB, or 200,000 bytes. In binary units 200 KB is about 0.195 MB.

Does this converter upload anything?

No. It is plain arithmetic that runs in your browser. It does not read any file; you type the numbers.
