Fresher resume format
If you are a student or a recent graduate, you may have no work experience to show. That is normal. A fresher resume works by putting your education, projects and skills in front of the reader in a clean one-page layout.
What recruiters look for in a fresher
A reader who opens a fresher resume is not expecting years of experience. They are looking for signs of three things: that you have the basic knowledge for the role, that you have done something real with it (a project, an internship, a club, a competition), and that you can present yourself clearly. A tidy page is itself a small piece of evidence of the third.
So the aim is not to look senior. It is to make your best evidence easy to find in about thirty seconds.
The order of sections
- Contact block. Name, phone, a professional email address, city, and a LinkedIn or portfolio link if you have one.
- Objective or summary. Two lines, written for the job, not a general wish.
- Education. First section, because it is your strongest credential. Latest qualification first.
- Projects. The main substitute for experience.
- Internships or training. If you have any, this can move above projects.
- Skills. Grouped, and matched to the job.
- Certifications. Only relevant ones.
- Achievements and activities. Awards, competitions, leadership, volunteering.
- Hobbies and interests (optional). One line.
- Declaration (only where customary). See below.
How to write each section
Objective or summary
Generic objectives like "to work in a challenging environment" say nothing. A better line names the role and what you offer: "Final-year B.Tech Computer Science student seeking a junior software developer role, with project experience in web applications and a working knowledge of Python and SQL." Two lines are enough.
Education
List the degree, the institution, the year (or expected year) and the result (percentage, CGPA or grade). Add the school-level results only if the job or country expects them. A short line of relevant coursework helps a reader who is matching you to a role.
Projects
Give each project a name, one line on what it does, the tools you used, and your own part. Where you can, add a result or a number: how many users, how fast, how many records, how many people were in the team. A link to the code or a demo is a strong addition.
Internships and training
Write the organisation, role, dates and two or three bullet points that start with an action verb and end with a result: "Built a monthly sales report in Excel that cut manual work from two hours to twenty minutes." A short summer internship still counts; just be honest about its length.
Skills
Group them so a reader can scan: "Languages: Python, Java, SQL. Tools: Git, Excel, Figma." List only skills you could talk about in an interview. Rating bars and star icons say little and can confuse automated parsers.
Achievements and activities
Include things that show initiative: a hackathon, a college event you organised, a sports or debate result, a volunteering role. Say what you did, not only the title.
A sample outline
The person here is fictional. Use the structure, not the words.

One page, and how to fit it
For a fresher, one page is the right length. If your resume spills over, cut before you shrink. Remove the weakest project, merge short sections, drop the hobbies line, and shorten bullets to one line each. Use a plain font between 10 and 12 points and consistent margins. White space helps readability more than extra content does.
Weak and strong bullets
The same piece of work can be described in two ways. Compare them.
- Weak: "Responsible for making a website for the college fest." Stronger: "Built the fest website in HTML, CSS and JavaScript; 1,200 students registered through it in two weeks."
- Weak: "Worked in a team on a mini project." Stronger: "In a team of four, wrote the database design and the report queries for a library management project."
- Weak: "Good communication skills." Stronger: "Presented the final-year project to a panel of five faculty members and answered their questions."
Start each bullet with a verb (built, wrote, tested, organised, analysed), say what you did, and add a number when a true one exists. If you do not have a number, a clear description is still better than a vague claim.
If you are changing fields
A fresher from a different stream, for example a commerce graduate applying for a marketing role, can list a short relevant course, a college club or an internship, and place the skills block directly under the summary so the match is visible straight away.
Photo, declaration and other local customs
Habits differ from country to country. In India, many fresher resumes still end with a declaration line such as "I hereby declare that the information given above is true to the best of my knowledge", followed by place, date and name. It is customary there but not required, and it adds nothing in many other countries. Photos are also common in India, Germany and some other countries but are discouraged in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada, where employers prefer not to receive them. When in doubt, follow the country and the company you are applying to, or leave the photo out.
Date of birth, marital status, religion and parents' names are details some formats include by custom and others leave out. For a first job in an international company, they are better omitted.
Common mistakes
- A generic objective copied from a template.
- Putting hobbies before projects.
- Listing every school marks card, every course and every workshop.
- A casual email address; use a simple one based on your name.
- Skills with no evidence anywhere on the page.
- Spelling and tense errors; ask someone else to read it.
- A different resume file name each time; use something like "Ananya-Rao-Resume.pdf".
- Saving as an image. Export a real text PDF so the file can be searched and parsed; see our ATS friendly resume guide.
Tailor it for each role
Read the job ad and note the three or four skills it mentions most. Make sure those that you genuinely have are visible in your skills and project lines, using the same words. A resume that matches the ad takes the reader seconds to approve; a generic one makes them work.

Questions people ask
What should a fresher put on a resume?
Contact details, a short summary, education, projects, any internships, skills, relevant certifications and a few achievements. Education comes first.
How long should a fresher resume be?
One page. If it is longer, cut the weakest items before reducing the font size.
Do I need a declaration at the end?
Only where it is customary, as in India. It is not required, and in most other countries it can be left out.
Should a fresher add a photo?
Follow local custom. Photos are common in India and Germany but discouraged in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada.
What if I have no projects or internships?
Use coursework, a class assignment, a club activity, volunteering or a self-made small project. Describe what you did and what came out of it.
PDF or Word for a fresher resume?
A text PDF keeps the layout the same on every device. Send Word only if the employer asks for it.
